Properties of chlorhexidine

  • 0.2% chlorhexidine (CHX) digluconate is still considered the gold standard for a short-term antiseptic treatment.
  • CHX has a low surface tension and is adsorbed by reversible electrostatic interaction onto all oral surfaces including any bacteria present.

However, various adverse reactions to chlorhexidine including alterations in taste sensation and discolouration of teeth limit usage to short-term interventions (Addy 1986, Fedorowicz et al. 2008).
